NE Area CAT Meeting Minutes 11th September 2013

Please find below the minutes from the last North East Area CAT meeting held at St Mary’s Parish Hall on 11^th September. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 19^th February 2014 at 7pm in St Mary’s Parish Hall, Burnley. The CAT group meets usually just twice a year and we always greatly appreciate new faces at our meetings so please come along to the next one if you can make it.

The NE Area CAT is holding a fundraiser for CAFOD on Friday 4^th October at 8pm in KSC 110 Club, Burnley. “The Hometowners” from the Rochdale/Oldham area, a renowned folk group, will be entertaining us on the night, so please bring your tambourine or other instrument for a great night out. North East Area CAT Meeting Minutes

The NE Area CAT met on Wednesday 20th February on a bitterly cold night at St Mary’s Parish Hall in Burnley. It was attended by several brave souls and a new member attended from Christ the King parish in Burnley. Lots of topics were discussed and these included the Hungry for Change campaign, the Tour de Fred and a planned Emmaus Meal at St John the Baptist’s Parish Hall on Monday 8th April at 7.30pm. To download a full copy of the minutes please click on the link below:

Hunger for change CAFOD weekend at St Anns SWCAT

The parish faith and justice met and considered the CAFOd proposals and liked some

BUT when it came to the Emmaus meal – well !!!

It was too complicated! It wouldn’t go down! We’ve got used to the bread and soup and CAFOD donations

There isn’t that MANY that come to these things. We are an ageing volunteer group.

It seemed like a baby and bathwater scenario was about to develop so i allowed them to  plan for other things  in the name of CAFOD.

We have got our stall paraphernalia back from Ged and we are holding a CAFOD stations on the Saturday morning.

All in all it will be a ‘a Cafod weekend’

Friday night  –   A Cafod theme Stations beforehand [6.20] with Mass [7.00] followed by a soup and bread supper [cafod donations] reading the Emmaus account during this

Saturday  – after mass a CAFOD reflection of the Stations – groups to do 3 stations each

Sunday – after 9.30 mass the coffee club to host a Cafod stall

We were going to ask Vin and his fair trade to make an appearance but this was deflected by the idea of the great bake later in the year. What do you think Vin? Do Both?

CAFOD Monthly Prayers in Burnley

The work of CAFOD is to be expanded when the spirituality team extend their prayers sessions to Burnley. Monthly prayers take place in the CAFOD Salford Office on the last Friday of every month. It has been decided to extend this to the North of the Diocese and will begin on the last Friday of January, that is this Friday at 11 am, in the upper room of St John’s Parish Hall, Burnley. Monthly prayer meetings will then be held every last Friday of the month at 11am.

The prayer sessions centre around the readings of the day and include reflection, music and intercessions and they will take place exactly at the same time as the sessions in Salford and will be the same prayers. A shared lunch or a cup of tea will follow depending on what the group decide they would like.

Looking to gather / recruit more education team members eg a retired school head recently joined the schools team, but you don’t need to be an ex-teacher to be a school volunteer, Fred Uttley, ex-plumber, is a school volunteer. Full training given, so why not take the plunge!

East Cat –  comedy Folk night – Bernie Slater –  the room holds 140 and tickets are £6 with £3 going to CAFOD

Bamber Bridge connect2 puentocinto group travelling from El Salvador. They will receive a final cheque as the host group are reconnecting with an Ethiopian church community. This will involve a presentation of a dummy cheque and a chance to advertise connect2, 17th March – St Patrick’s night.

Fred Bike ride  – all round England and Wales. 22 diocese calling in London Head office and ending back in Salford in May or June. Hoping for Bike volunteers to join in from parish to parish and CAT to CAT, Diocese to Diocese. Hungry for Change – Sponsorship for £ and hopefully a Bike and more. Halfords? Wiggins? Granada?

Hungry for change bangles made with CAFOD logo and sold for 50p towards a meal sponsorship. School children assembled them, parishioners made them and the parish supported to the tune of 900 sold. each bangle supplied a meal for a CAFOD project recipient eg Kenya Emily and Family.

Emmaus meal – HFC – Kenya – Emily

[a]amazing woman Emily – mother of 5 and providing food for the table, work at subsistence level and looking to break out of the poverty cycle by getting goods to market and not the local shops to achieve a realistic value for her produce and thereby leave surplus to send her kids to school.  [b] potato curry – basic – what do we waste individually? [c] community share – table meal

Take to parish as a parish event – usually have a soup and bread event. maybe stage over 4 weeks with a little of the story unfolding each week until the unfolding of the whole message / story.

Quantity per person? suggestion of £2 per head. Give a relativity to the meal [winston churchill commented on the NW rationing allocation and later found it was a weeks food and not a single sitting]

CAT raise Fred’s bike ride profile, co-ordinate the joining in with Fred on different parts of his legs across the diocese, CATs, parishes.

what can we do a s a CAT to raise awareness for Hunger for change with ‘our’ MP’s?

suggestion of encouraging communities within our parishes to speak with us at Parish Fast masses to give a better ownership of the challenge of the Hunger for change impact, eg Kenyan, Bangladeshi etc etc

Fair Trade ingredients utilised for ‘the great bake’  – challenge to cook all 50 CAFOD fair trade recipes in a form of baton passing, parish challenging – competition fundraiser across the CAT.

Group [1] [a] support Fred’s bike ride  [1] contact schools and challenge to carry out a sponsored bike ride around the school yard in collusion with Freds endeavour for example in the thirst for change campaign the school kids carried pails of water within the school grounds under sponsorship [b] walk and hunger picnic – there are common areas for the CATs to participate in. [c] Emmaus meal in CAT and then cascade out into parishes

Group [3] [a] Bike ride once we know the route of the legendary ride we can support as fred passes the parishes and the CAT. in france the public turn up at various points and lend support, fun to move with him / his party – collection buckets / ride along. there was once an action on poverty and the general parishioners could not jin in but put on a parrallel event and sponsored with this towards the original event.

Group [4] [a] try to get the West CAT to participate in structured card signing – team to comprise of CAT activists moving from parish to parish [b] hunger walk organised by CAT and supported by CAT who has already done this [c] look at MP’s within the CAT and contact about Hunger campaign : gradation of level of committment and action [d] fred’s bike ride support onroad and offroad support

Carols by Candlelight for CAFOD in Padiham

Carols by Candlelight at St John the Baptist’s Padiham

St John the Baptist & St Philip the Apostle Outreach to the World Group invite you to a wonderful evening of community singing. Come along and sing your favourite carols to get yourself into the Christmas spirit. The money raised will go towards Connect2 Rwanda. Mince pies and wine will be served after the event in the Community Hall.

When: Friday 14th December at 7.30pm

Venue: St John the Baptist Church, St John’s Rd, Padiham, BB12 7BN

Tickets: £3 adults and children free (must be accompanied by an adult)

North East Area CAT CAFOD Quiz Night

On the Friday 9th November St John the Baptist’s & St Philip the Apostle’s Outreach to the World Group hosted their 3rd CAFOD Quiz Night. The quiz was held at St Philip’s Parish Hall and attracted teams from around the North East Area CAT, they included teams from Rossendale, Burnley and Todmorden. This time the quiz master was Mike Smith, a Burnley based quiz host who organizes many quiz nights for Pendleside Hospice. Mike did a fine job testing the general knowledge of the CAFOD supporters.

The evening was well attended by almost 100 people and the contest was a close run thing with the final result going to a tie-breaker! The teams enjoyed a delicious hot-pot supper at the interval and brought their own various liquid refreshments to oil the thought processes. The night was a great success raising just over £400 for the CAFOD Connect2 Rwanda project for which St John’s & St Philip’s are raising money. Another quiz will be held next year so keep refreshing the grey matter in readiness for next year’s contest.
